Killarney Legion Minors victorious in Shield Final

Legion and Churchill met on Tuesday evening in Dereen in the County League Group 2 Shield final.  With Churchill low on numbers the game was played at 12 a side. On a hot evening both teams turned in a magnificent display of football as a highly entertaining game was played out. Legion, with the aid of the breeze went ahead early with some fine point kicking but the visitors responded in kind. It was tit for tat until Kiera Moynihan hit the net for the first legion goal. Another well worked goal, this time by Sophie O Shea put 6 in it at the break, legion 2-06 Churchill 0-06.

The home team started to take control early in the second half, going 9 clear with some well worked scores from the boot of full forward Laura Healy. Churchill weren’t done yet though and, with the wind on their backs, put the home defence under pressure only for them to stand firm under the guidance of full back Beatrice Corridan. They did breach the defence with a well taken goal mid way through the half to reduce the deficit and to their credit rallied hard towards the end. A well Worked move up the other end resulted in Legions 3rd goal of the game from substitute Kate Fleming to again put a gap between the teams. Churchill laid siege to the legion goal towards the end but the defence stood tall and closed out the game to win on a scoreline of Legion 3-11 Churchill 1-14
